Jason Mraz has been named the 2010 Surf Industry Manufacturers Association (SIMA) Humanitarian of the Year.
Fernando Aguerre, SIMA Humanitarian Fund president said of the vegan musician, “As a fellow surfer who calls the beaches of San Diego home, Jason is one of our own.”
“He not only inspires us and millions of young people around the world with his amazing musical talent, but we are all immensely impressed by his humble and eager heart to help others and make this world a better place,” Aguerre added.
Mraz is an outspoken proponent of the vegetarian and raw food movements as well as the local, small farming community. A farmer himself, Mraz tends to an avocado plantation at home.
According to The Daily Tell, Mraz has also joined numerous celebrities who champion the cause of protecting dolphins hunted in Japan.
Late last year, Mraz played a sold out concert in his hometown of San Diego where he spotlighted several charities and gave fans the option of paying whatever they wanted. Some of the proceeds from the concert went towards a few of Mraz’s favorite charities, like VH1 Save The Music, Sand Diego Youth Services and Surfrider Foundation.
The idea for the charity concert was spawned from a feature at one of his favorite vegan restaurants, which offered a mystery bowl of food that customers could pay whatever they wanted, still getting a satisfying meal in the end.
