Ellen DeGeneres recently Tweeted a photo of a baby calf born at a farm animal sanctuary
“Look at this brand new baby calf born yesterday at The Gentle Barn! How sweet is she?”
The Gentle Barn is home to 150 animals (or maybe it is now 151 if they haven’t updated their website yet) that were rescued from abuse and neglect. The baby calf will share its home with horses, donkeys, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, turkeys, chickens, llamas, dogs, and cats.
The non-profit in Santa Clarita, California was founded by Ellie R. Laks and is run by Ellie and her partner Jay Weiner.
Besides allowing visitors to interact with the animals on the property that is full of open pastures and an organic vegetable garden, Laks and Weiner also work with neglected humans–the couple makes an extra effort to invite groups of at risk children to the farm, such as those in the foster system or in mental health facilities, to interact with animals as both a learning and healing experience.
