“There’s this expectation that men should eat like a man and that women should serve men meat, should give him what he wants. There’s this conception that vegetarianism was okay for women and those associated with women. Homophobia is connected to meat-centered definitions of maleness. The idea that men should eat meat is rampant in our culture. Being taught to believe a diet like that is good for them. I hate to break it to you. But meat eating can cause [impotence] when you get older. This is not healthy. Men are not benefiting form the sexual politics of meat.”

Vegetarian women still cooking steak for their husbands might want to read an interview Carol J. Adams, author of The Sexual Politics of Meat, has with Conducive Chronicle. Not only does Adams give the thumbs down to this practice, as it has women putting aside their own desires for their husband’s, she also makes a connection between men who kill animals and batter women.

“It’s about control, which might get expressed by demanding meat to eat, within that couple and within our culture. But I never claimed, and don’t believe, that eating a hamburger causes one to beat his wife. I do believe that someone who believes he needs to eat hamburger, who has to restore a sense of his manhood by eating male-identified foods, tells us a great deal about our culture’s teachings about men and virility. I know from working with battered women that animals often are injured as part of the control a batterer exercises. And I also believe that if a batterer kills an animal, the woman is in danger and should seek help.”

Feminist Equates Eating Meat With Misogyny At Harvard Speech

Carol J. Adams, author of the book, The Sexual Politics of Meat, spoke on the campus of Harvard University, urging students to go vegetarian, comparing eating meat to misogyny.

The event was sponsored by the Harvard College Vegetarian Society.

Adams said that meat eating is often equated with masculinity and places that celebrate meals of meat also tend to objectify women, such as Hooter’s.

Some criticized Adams for not bringing enough statistics into her speech, such as the effects of meat on human health and the environment.

Adams responded by saying both meat eating and debasing women should be looked at as “experiences” rather than numbers.

“I don’t give a damn about statistics,” Adams said. “I feel that using statistics participates in a rationalized way of thinking about the problem that undercuts my perspective.”

The Harvard Crimson reports most of her aggressive questioners were male.

They probably had just come from their dinner of burgers from the student union.
