“Treating other sensitive, intelligent beings like disposable laboratory equipment is wrong, and—although I was a business and music major at CU-Boulder—I know that there must be better ways to teach undergraduates than by having them needlessly torment, maim, and kill hundreds of animals.”

Brandon Barnes, drummer for Rise Against, in a letter to officials at the University of Colorado at Boulder on their current policies on animal testing and experimentation. In the letter, Barnes invites the university to explore more humane methods of research, and mentions that his alma mater’s Denver location already has a policy in place to not test on live animals.

The drummer of the all vegetarian band Rise Against, Brandon Barnes, sat down for a little one on one chit chat with tomtimms.com where he talked about how easy it is to be veg and gave some thoughts on global warming and Sarah Palin.

This isn’t the first time Brandon has expressed himself on the 2008 vice presidential candidate. She must stir up a world of opinions!

So it was sorta by chance you all were vegetarians and had the same beliefs.
Yeah we all have same politics, not all bands have that dynamic. We’re all veggie and minded on those beliefs.

How is it on the road and finding the grub.
Well the catering is all veggie, restaurants are very accommodating to vegetarians. We can get pasta and veggie burgers. Most major cities now have vegetarian restaurants.

What do you think about Governor Palin talking about the ice glacier’s not melting due to Global Warming.
Yeah I saw the skit with Tina Fey on SNL, one of her lines was “There isn’t global warning, its just god hugging us a little tighter”. Most of the major scientist in the world agree that global warming is the cause, so you can’t really argue against it as its pretty much fact. I think alot of the Republicans wanna believe it’s not. Climate change does go in cycles, however they wanna keep drilling. What happened to the battery operated car, it’s a possibility. There are all these people who own oil and sell oil there keeping things like that from developers as they wanna make more money. Sarah Palin probably does know.

Rise Against Straight Edge Band…Almost

Written by Vegetarian Star on Thursday, June 4th, 2009 in Bands.

Tim Harmon

You already know the guys of Rise Against are vegetarian and big time animal rights supporters. That’s why they’re encouraging people to petition the Canadian government and Olympics committee to stop steal hunting.

But did you also know every one of the guys, with the exception of drummer Brandon Barnes, are straight-edge, which is a lifestyle marked by abstaining from many things, including alcohol.

Their latest tour kicks off in Canada this summer, where they’ll have bands like Rancid and Billy Talent opening for them.

“I became vegetarian for three major reasons. I was tired of giving money to businesses and organizations that practice animal cruelty, pollute the environment, and clear cut forest for cattle fields.”

Rise Against’s Brandon Barnes Missed Sarah Palin’s Slaughter Show

Written by Vegetarian Star on Tuesday, December 30th, 2008 in Male Musicians.

It’s just as well. He probably would have demanded his money back anyway.

Drummer Brandon Barnes in the all vegetarian band Rise Against said he didn’t watch the infamous video of Sarah Palin doing an interview with turkeys getting slaughtered in the background. You see, he’s not a fan, so he didn’t TiVo it or anything.

“No, I missed that,” he told Blog Critics. “Rise Against are not huge fans of Sarah Palin, but it doesn’t surprise me that she would do that. She doesn’t seem to be in control of a lot [of] the things she does, she’s had a lot of slips here and there.”

Yeah, tell us about it. She’ll be slipping up even more with all that wet snow being thrown at her lately.

Rise Against Concert Memorabilia Include PETA Pamphlets

Written by Vegetarian Star on Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008 in Bands.

When you go to a concert, you expect to be able to buy some CDs, posters, and a T-shirt if you have any money left over after beer funds have been allotted. If you go to a Rise Against concert, frontman Tim McIlrath and his boys will give you something for free: PETA Pamphlets containing information on going vegetarian.

“Kids are taking the time to do research on their own after they hear about us being vegetarian,” band member Joe Principe said, in an interview with Mercury News. “We want them to think for themselves, so it’s totally rewarding when they come to that conclusion on their own.”

The same types of brochures convinced Principe to turn vegetarian after reading some PETA literature distributed at a punk concert. All four members of the band Zach Blair, Brandon Barnes, Tim McIlrath, and Joe Principe are vegetarian.

“The way that burger ends up on your plate is pretty ugly. That burger may look fine on your plate, but if you go back and look where it came from, it’s disgusting, I think, really.”
