“Sometimes less is s’more,” begins Bobby Deen during an episode of Not My Mama’s Meals, a show where he does healthier versions of Paula Deen‘s classic southern recipes.
“Mine only have 214 calories and just 17 grams of fat,” he says of his healthier version of the marshmallow and graham cracker snack featuring bananas.
Deen’s visit to the Sweet and Sara kitchen where the world’s best vegan s’mores are manufactured taught him a little s’more about desserts–how to make them without butter.
“I went vegan when I was 13,” said Sara Sohn, founder and owner of New York based Sweet and Sara, a company that specializes in vegan s’mores and other gelatin-free marshmallow treats.
“It was hard not being able to have my favorite childhood treats anymore,” Sohn explained her reasoning behind experimenting with a few goodies that eventually resulted in income. Two of her favorite treats growing up were rice krispie treats and s’mores.
Deen gets a walk through the Sweet and Sara kitchen teaches him a lesson in making both s’mores and graham crackers without animal products. After sampling the graham crackers, Deen says he’s certain not even his mother–the queen of butter–could taste the difference.
