Curtis Stone has joined the Humane Society of the United States in its campaign to end the Canadian seal slaughter.

The Top Chef star is one of 6,000 chefs, stores and restaurants participating to pressure the Canadian government to end the practice involving the killing of the pups for their pelts.

“I’m proud to stand with The Humane Society of the United States and the hundreds of other chefs working to encourage Canada’s fishing industry and its government to end the Canadian seal slaughter once and for all,” said Stone. “It’s important to stand up for what is right, and as chefs we have the power to enact change.”

According to a list of facts from the HSUS, the majority of income for commercial sealers does not come from seals but from seafood including crab, shrimp and lobster.

A poll conducted in 2010 by research firm Ipsos Reid showed 50 percent of Newfoundland sealers holding an opinion support a federal industry buyout – a plan in which sealers would be compensated for their licenses and money would be invested in economic alternatives to the hunt.
