“Around The World In 80 Plates” Crowns Vegan Blogger Champion

Hannah Kaminsky, blogger behind Bittersweet and a cookbook that contains many delicious, dessert recipes that originated from the website, won Bravo’s Around the World in 80 Plates Cookoff Challenge.
Kaminsky’s prize is $3,000 that goes towards a trip to anywhere in the world where she may sample vegan dishes on a global level.
Kaminsky took some time to discuss the challenge on one of her Bittersweet posts.
“Florence and Bologna may be separated by a mere 75 miles or so, but the cultural differences are truly worlds apart. Bologna, Italy, part of the Emilia-Romagna region is nicknamed as both “the learned one” (la dotta) and “the fat one” (la grassa) in reference to its eponymous university and rich cuisine, respectively. A telling indication of what’s to come, Bolognese food pulls no punches, and doesn’t hold back when it comes to meats, cheeses, and pastas. What does this mean for a vegan with a sweet tooth? …Very little.”
Kaminsky uses the opportunity of Italian desserts to discuss a common food dye derived from insects–cochineal extract. Lady Fingers are dipped in a sauce that would normally contain the dye. Kaminsky modified this by using cherry juice.
