Uggie, a Jack Russell Terrier famous for his roles in Mr. Fix It, Water for Elephants, and most recently The Artist, is the latest celebrity for PETA to promote shelter pet adoption as opposed to buying from a shop or breeder.

Uggie knows firsthand the horrors of being the animal who wonders if he’ll find a permanent home. Before being rescued by trainer, Omar Von Muller, Uggie was rejected by his first set of owners for being “too wild” and was headed for the pound.

“He was a crazy, very energetic puppy,” Mr Von Muller said. “And who knows what would have happened to him if he gone to the dog pound.”

Uggie has experienced much during his film career and has penned such memories in a book by Gallery Books, Uggie: My Story which will be ghost written by author Wendy Holden. It is due out in October.

Uggie discusses his animal rights gig in his story, where he compares himself to some of the top stars known for the charitable contributions as much as their acting.

“Now in my retirement years, I have moved on from Oscar-winning films to philanthropic endeavors, including being a PETA spokesdog. I’ve now joined the ranks of do-gooding celebrities, like Angelina and Gaga. No wonder they call me the George Clooney of dogs. (If you’re not calling me that, feel free to start.)”
