It was an intense vegan and animal welfare moment on the Ellen DeGeneres Show today, because the camera was spotlighted on two incredible animal advocates.

DeGeneres hosted Humane Society’s Wayne Pacelle and the two discussed Pacelle’s latest book, The Bond.

The book is an exploration of the relationship between humans and animals and the unfortunate times when that normally protective relationship is broken through inhumane farm practices, using animals in sports and entertainment and other forms of neglect. The Bond then gives solutions for mending that broken relationship.

“I call it The Bond because when I was a kid, I loved animals,” Pacelle said and goes on to explain how he feels most people share the sentiment and desire to protect them.

“It’s no accident that we have 171 million dogs and cats in our homes, 80 million of us are wildlife watchers, there are 20 thousand animal welfare groups in the country. We’re not inventing a concern for animals. We’re just kind of expressing it and saying, “Hey, we need to be good to these other creatures because they’re vulnerable. We have all the power in these relationships with these animals and how we handle ourselves is a test to our humanity. We can be cruel or we can be kind. And I say we need to be kind.”

“I agree,” DeGeneres said.

    “I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals…To this day I don’t feel
bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.” Wayne Pacelle quoted in Bloodties: Nature, Culture and the Hunt by Ted Kerasote,
    1993, p. 251, before joining the HSUS.
