PepsiCo Launches EthioPEA To Aid Chickpea Farmers

Health food and junk food make a good combination sometimes.

What could be more refreshing than nice, vegetarian source of protein with potato chips and soda? The fact that you’re helping to empower people in another part of the world makes it so much better.

PepsiCo, the corporation behind several brands of snacks, will be working to help Ethiopia farmers increase their chickpea production.

PepsiCo has joined United Nation’s World Food Programme and US Agency for International Development to launch EthioPEA.

The goal of EthioPEA is to enable up to 10,000 chickpea farmers to double their yield by providing modern farming equipment. EthioPEA is also aiming to increase export of the farmers’ product and develop the plant into a supplement to be distributed to malnurished children.

From the PepsiCo webite:

With an average of 22 percent protein, chickpeas are a more sustainable alternative to meat and have the potential to reduce risk of coronary artery disease and diabetes. While Ethiopia is Africa’s largest producer of chickpeas, there remains high potential to increase yields and improve quality.

“PepsiCo’s partnership with the World Food Programme and USAID is well designed to address the needs of many of our most important stakeholders, including customers and communities,” said Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo. “We are pleased to be combining powerful local networks, proven experience in development assistance and strong industry expertise to help create new domestic and export food markets. This initiative will positively impact the livelihood of local farmers, address the critical issue of famine in the Horn of Africa and create sustainable business opportunities for PepsiCo.”
