Rise of the Planet of the Apes is coming to a theatre near you this month, but don’t expect to watch any real apes while you’re munching on popcorn.
The film uses computer generated imagery to create realistic images of animals without having to subject them to the potential stresses that might occur if they were actually on the set.
“We wanted to tell our story without using live apes for any number of reasons,” said director Rupert Wyatt. “It would be a cruel irony to tell the story of the exploited and repressed and use live apes to do so.”
The story is portrayed by actor Andy Serkis, who is an a chimp named Caesar who resides in a research laboratory. Caesar is exposed to a drug meant to cure a human disease and it inadvertently gives him more human brain powers. He is then motivated to help other chimps and enlighten them as well.
Serkis prepared for the film by watching and imitating a gorilla.
“You don’t want to anthropomorphize an animal too much,” Serkis said. “But they really are like us. We share 97% of the same DNA.”
