Activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals staged a protest outside the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, California at the premiere of Kevin James‘ new Zookeeper film.

Although New York Magazine says the movie earned an approval rating from the American Humane Association, the group claims a giraffe collapsed and died after filming a scene.

Julia Galleucci, an animal behavioral specialist with the group gave a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

“PETA is calling upon moviegoers to boycott the film in order to send a message to Hollywood that audiences care about what happens to these animals behind the scenes.”

Tweet, the giraffe who died on the set, had roles in Ace Ventura and Toys R Us commercials.

PETA says Tweet was confined to an area that was so small, it was unhealthy and did not give the animal room to move around like he would in the wild.

Although most giraffes live to their mid-twenties in the wild, Tweet died at age 18.
