Vaute Couture founder and president Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart has an interview with From A To Vegan where she discusses her lifelong interest in fashion and the events that led her to start a vegan clothing company.
“I always just had a really strong, gut reaction whenever someone is being picked on or exploited or something’s not fair,”Hilgart said. “When I was a kid…[I thought] there’s just something not quite right about how we were treating animals.”
Hilgart comes from a family where animal products were extremely valued. Her mother is a from a country where heavy meat eating is the norm and her father worked in the dairy industry. She has gradually converted them to plant-heavy eaters.
A vegetarian since her teens, Hilgart has designed coats, shirts and other items demanded by Hollywood vegetarians like Alicia Silverstone, who said, “I love the styles, but what I love even more is what this company stands for.”
Besides using no animal products, including wool, Hilgart also creates earth friendly fashions by using recycled materials.
