Quantcast Vegetarian StarLauren Bush Says Traveling Not Always Vegetarian Friendly

In 2007, Lauren Bush launched FEED Projects, a program that works with the UN World Food Program to feed hungry people. Since then, her eco-friendly and fashionable totes displaying the signature FEED logo have fed thousands all over the world, including the United States and most recently, victims of the Japan tsunami and earthquake.

Although she’s a successful CEO, Bush isn’t holed up in a stuffy office hiding behind paper, designs and invoices. She’s gotten out and traveled to places far from her hometown in Texas. Given the fact she’s a pioneer behind fashion that’s trendy and charitable, it’s no surprise one of her favorite activities to do while abroad includes shopping, even if she gets a little hungry from time to time in places where it’s hard to find veg food.

From an interview in the Huffington Post:

“I love going to local fabric shops! I find it really inspiring, and it has really inspired what I do now. So that’s a big part of it — discovering local fabrics and markets and traditional crafts. I’m a vegetarian, so sometimes food isn’t always my friend, but sometimes it’s amazing. It’s hit or miss. For me, it’s all about walking around, exploring and taking photos.”

If you’re one who can’t keep your feet on the ground (or off the railway or boat or however you choose to travel), the chance of scoring some amazing vegetarian food increases dramatically when you do a little bit of research from many great online sources beforehand.

Happycow.net is one large site offering veg restaurant listings around the world, complete with reviews. For US traveling, Vegetarian USA has an easy to click-on map that takes you to veg-specific tourist needs in every state. The Vegetarian Resource Group has a plethora of links directed to dining and other articles on vegetarian traveling. And Circleourearth has specific vegan travel guides listed by country.

Don’t forget the VegOut iphone app for when you’re on the go.

I’ve found that you can get at least vegetarian food anywhere at any restuarant. All you have to do is be super nice to the waiters and waitresses and/or be willing to eat mostly salad or steamed veggies. With vegetarianism and veganism becoming more socially acceptable, a lot of places are puting more veg friendly items on their menus. And just about everywhere has a veggie burger now..
The only tough spot is Mexican resturants. They often use lard for beans and chicken stock for rice, so options are limited…

As a vegan pilot for an on demand charter company I am faced with the same problems. Many times I don’t have any idea where I’ll end up or for how long.
