Dexter star Julie Benz, Eva Longoria and Alyssa Milano are sending Tweets out in support of a petition to make animal cruelty a more severely punishable crime.
“Please sign… Will You Support Harsher Penalties For Animal Abuse? Need 5,000 signatures lets make a difference together!” Benz Tweeted, with a link to the petition during a Twitter message.
The petition started after the publicity that generated when a woman allegedly threw a dog 19 stories down a garbage chute and left him for dead.
Twenty-seven year old Kisha Curtis was charged with “torture and torment of a living creature,” according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and faces 18 months in jail or a $3,000 fine if convicted.
New Jersey is ranked at the very bottom of the list–47th–among states for its animal protection laws.
The petition at Change.org is asking for the maximum sentence in Curtis’ case, which goes to trial May 6. It is also reaching out to NJ senators and representatives to encourage the enforcement of stricter penalties.
