Meatless Mouthful–k.d. Lang A Softer Vegetarian These Days

“I think when you say you’re vegetarian, it hits a button in people. Somewhere deep inside them, they go ‘Ooh. That makes me feel weird. I have to think about what I’m eating. That’s hard!’ But vegetarians can be painfully self-righteous. I’ve been a vegetarian for 30 years and I’ve certainly gone through militant phases where Chrissie Hynde and I have been like, ‘Fuck you, meat eaters!”
—k.d. Lang, on how she’s gotten a little nicer about being a vegetarian over the years. Of course, many people, especially in her hometown where cattle is king, haven’t always been nice to her.
Lang recorded a PSA with a cow that said, “We all love animals, but why do we call some of them pets and some of them dinner? If you knew how meat was made, you’d probably lose your lunch. I know, I’m from cattle country – that’s why I became a vegetarian. Meat stinks, and not just for animals but for human health and the environment.”
Soon after the ad aired, she had everything done to her by her fellow Canadians in Alberta from being called “unladylike” to having a sign that read “Home of k.d. Lang” burned to the ground.

when that public bashing happened, my mom wrote a letter of support to KD’s mom, as the fellow mom of an Alberta vegetarian…I thought that was really cool.
