Quantcast Vegetarian Star“The Cove” Director Gives All Taiji Residents Free DVD

The Cove

Residents in a town where an annual dolphin hunt takes place now have the opportunity to learn what happens during the slaughter in their own homes.

The Cove director Louie Psihoyos worked with a group called People Concerned for the Ocean and delivered a copy to every home in Taiji, Japan via mail.

Despite protests and cancellations, the film was finally able to show in some Japanese theatres.

During the hunt, some dolphins are captured to be taken to marine parks while others are killed and later sold for food.

An obvious health problem for the dolphins, but it’s also dangerous for the people of Taiji as the meat is high in mercury. Levels of mercury in Taiji residents have been found to be higher than the national average and it’s suspected this is due to the consumption of the meat.

“The people in Taiji deserve to know what millions of others around the world have learned about their town,” said Psihoyos to the Associated Press.

“I hope the people of Taiji feel a sense of relief when they see ‘The Cove’ because they’ll realize that it is just a handful of local environmental thugs giving a whole nation a black eye, not them.”

“To me the film is a love letter to the people of Taiji.”

Let’s hope for the sake of the animals and people of Taiji this love letter isn’t returned to sender.
