Quantcast Vegetarian StarCarol Leifer Says Go Vegan To Go Green (Video)

Carol Leifer

Comedian and co-executive producer of Rules of Engagement Carol Leifer has a serious tip for those wanting to save the planet.

When Mother Nature Network asked her to share her tip for going green, Leifer replied:

“Did you know that by going vegan you are so much more ecological and green than anything else? You make so much more of a statement with your fork than what you drive. So go vegan, people. Do it for the environment. And do it for your health, too.”

Don’t believe that eating nuts, legumes and grains damages the planet less than consuming steak and burgers? Calculate the cost of your next meal using the Food Emissions Calculator.

The calculator takes a food category, such as beans and pulses, then asks for the specific food in that category like dry beans, tofu or flour. It takes into account miles traveled from farm to store and quantity of food purchased by the consumer.

The food carbon emissions are calculated in Kg of CO2e, which are carbon dioxide equivalents–greenhouse gases like Carbon Dioxide, Methane and Nitrous Oxide.

Comparing food from the beans and pulses, meat and dairy categories shows the difference in greenhouse gases emitted from their productions:

  • A pound of tofu that travels 1400 miles is equal to 0.32 Kg CO2e of production emissions.
  • A pound of beef that travels the same distance equals 7.38 Kg CO2e of production emissions.
  • A pound of chicken traveling the same distance equals 1.7 Kg CO23 of production emissions.
  • A pound of cheese traveling the same distance equals 4.46 Kg CO2e of production emission.

How many greenhouse gases did your last meal produce? Check out the Food Carbon Emissions Calculator to find out.
