Quantcast Vegetarian StarMoby Is Former Vegan And Vegetarian Hater (Video)

Moby

Moby has been a vegan for about half his life, but at a Wanderlust Festival Speakeasy Lecture series, the musician filled in the blanks about what his diet was like before he found the starving kitten in the dumpster that made him rethink his dedication to animals.

“Up until the time I was about 19 years old, I had nothing but disdain for vegetarians and vegans. There was a woman in my high school class and she refused to play softball because the mitt was made out of leather. And I just thought that was the stupidest thing I’d ever heard.”

“I only ate–I ate McDonald’s, I ate Burger King. My mom would occasionally buy tofu and not know what to do with it. So it would like sit in the fridge and I’d open the fridge and I’d look at it and go, “Oh, please, don’t try to sneak that into something.”

Besides giving the facts on meat eating and health, costs in terms of farm subsidies and the environmental consequences of animal farms, Moby emphasizes that vegans and vegetarians need to speak to meat eaters more often because talking to another veg does nothing but having us agreeing with each other.

So the next time someone asks you the stupidest question of why you don’t want to play softball with the leather mitt, try explaining. Even if they’re annoying, degrading, disrespectful or trolling in an Internet forum.

Many vegans were meat eaters at one point. And some, like the great Moby, hated their veggie peers once too.
