Quantcast Vegetarian StarBill Clinton–Top Green President Still Sets Example With Diet (Video)

Bill Clinton

During his two terms as president, Bill Clinton was able to accomplish much in the area of environmental protection.

He increased protection for wetlands, extended a moratorium on offshore oil leases and oversaw a 50% increase in annual funding that went towards the research and development of clean energy.

Those are some of the reasons Clinton is featured as one of Planet Green’s Top 5 Green Presidents.

But one of America’s greenest made a huge impact on the enviornment through his personal choices long after he’d left Pennsylvania Ave.

Last year, Clinton announced to the world he was following a vegan diet. Motivated by health factors, Clinton’s choice of eating mostly almond milk, beans, legumes and fruits and vegetables made an immediate impact on the planet.

Raising animals for food, especially in a factory farm setting, is a tremendous source of greenhouse gases and consumes land, water and energy. One estimate says that for each person that goes vegetarian, 100 animals are not slaughtered and one acre of forest is saved.

And what if everyone followed Clinton’s lead, if only for one day a week?

According to another set of statistics, the U.S. would save the following:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 1.2 million tons of CO2
  • 3 million tons of soil erosion and $70 million in resulting economic damages
  • 4.5 million tons of animal excrement
  • Almost 7 tons of ammonia emissions, a major air pollutant

Hats off to one of the best green presidents ever, who still continues to lead his country and the rest of the world.
