Pamela Anderson is one hot activist. Not just good looking, but “hot,” as in she has a tireless passion for helping both animals and people. The longtime vegetarian has recently announced she’s donating the money from her most recent Playboy Cover shoot to Waves 4 Water, a charity that brings clean drinking water to people who have trouble accessing it.
“Waves 4 water are my heroes,” Anderson told TMZ. “They get things done… and yes, Playboy wrote them a check when I shot the cover directly for 25Gs. I’ve also donated personally. I wish I could do more. Indonesia, Haiti and Pakistan are all in need of these filters. Spread the word!”
Water is something the bottle carrying wealthy and industrialized world takes for granted, but according to Water.org., the liquid necessity is so hard to come by in a sanitized state in other parts of globe, every 20 seconds a child dies from a water-related disease. Water.org provides several other interesting facts on its website.
- More people in the world have access to cell phones than a toilet.
- 884 million people lack access to safe water supplies; approximately one in eight people.
- Poor people living in the slums often pay 5-10 times more per liter of water than wealthy people living in the same city.
As far as the environment is concerned, scientists estimate water will become a resource hard to come by in the future for some nations.
- The UN estimates that by 2025, forty-eight nations, with combined population of 2.8 billion, will face freshwater “stress” or “scarcity”.
- Agriculture is the largest consumer of freshwater by far: about 70% of all freshwater withdrawals go to irrigated agriculture.
Let’s not forget that meat is one of the biggest areas of agriculture that uses tons of water. It’s estimated that one pound of beef requires an input of approximately 2500 gallons of water, whereas a pound of soy requires 250 gallons of water and a pound of wheat only 25 gallons. The water used to produce just one hamburger is enough for you to take a shower every day for 2 1/2 weeks.
