Katherine Heigl has pledged to donate $1 million dollars to spay and neuter programs in Los Angeles.

The “Life As We Know It” actress kicked off an initiative in collaboration with the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation called “The Compassion Revolution,” which aims to reduce the number of animals in LA area shelters.

If compassion for animals does not appeal to some, the costs of such a tragedy should be enough to make even the biggest cynic turn their head. According to The Hollywood Reporter, each year, 500,000 animals are sheltered and euthanized in California, which costs the state $250 million dollars. Heigl has emphasized to the media that many people are completely unaware of these numbers, as well as the statistics on how easily animals that aren’t fixed can multiply.

“They have no idea that a litter of 10 means a litter of, like, 400 in the future,” Heigl said. “We can tell them and educate them, and provide a way for them to spay and neuter their pets.”

We’ve already touched on the fact that one cat can bring 15-30 kittens into the world a year based on its reproductive abilities. For dogs, litter size is based on factors like age and breed, with younger and larger dogs producing the biggest litters and vice versa.

Some details on where the funds for Compassion Revolution are going were included in a press release.

• $30,000 to Dr. Novy’s Valley Vet non-profit, to fund rescue spay/neuters in Camarillo and

surrounding areas.

• $100,000 to Spay4LA to complete the funding of a mobile spay/neuter clinic, to provide low-income

residents of South Los Angeles access to FREE spay/neuter for their pets as a means to decrease the

number of stray animals, shelter intake, euthanasia and costs. The goal of this South LA mobile unit is

to sterilize 5,000 animals annually.

• $50,000 to Downtown Dog Rescue for spay/neuter in the Compton area, via the AngelDogs

Foundation mobile clinic.

• $50,000 to H.E.A.L. to provide free spay/neuter to San Bernardino and the surrounding area.
