Quantcast Vegetarian StarBif Naked Backs Fur-Bearer Defenders On Cat And Dog Fur Ban

Bif Naked

Bif Naked is supporting a bill introduced in Canada by Winnipeg MP Anita Neville that would ban the import of dog and cat fur into the country.

In an open letter on behalf of Fur-Bearer Defenders, Naked wrote, “I am concerned about the domestic cat and dog fur trade that is happening overseas, and I support legislation to ban the import and sale of these products. I am writing this letter to show my support for Bill-C439.”

Approximately 4,000 people have already signed a postcard campaign backing the bill. The problem may not be that so many Canadians support this fur trade, but that they’re unaware it’s happening.

Adrian Nelson, director of Communications at Fur-Bearers said, “Fur and fur-trimmed products don’t need to be labelled, so consumers believe it’s faux fur, when it can actually be cat and dog fur.”

Both the United States and the European Union have already banned the sale of dog and cat fur.

Still waiting, however, for these nations to ban every type of fur, including fox, mink, chinchilla and other creatures not usually kept as pets.

Fur-Bearers Defenders says that about 2 million cats and dogs are used in the fur industry every year and that these animals’ products are used to make fur trim in coats and other clothing, hats, figurines and toys. That means it’s possible the toy you bought for your own pet could have been manufactured from someone else’s former one.

BRAVO BIF! In May, I wrote to all of Bif Naked’s emails on her site, her Twitter, and Facebook to ask her to get involved to help ban the sale of cat and dog fur in Canada. Not sure if I had an impact, but it sure is encouraging me to contact more Canadian celebs to get involved.

Pamela Anderson’s working on the seal issue, why don’t Canadian celebs stand up? If you can use your celebrity to make change, why not? Heather Mills convinced the E.U. (28 countries!) to ban the cat & dog fur trade. The U.S.A. banned it in 2000. We are way behind in Canada…

Let’s all write to Canadian celebrities who love animals via Twitter, Facebook, their web sites, writing letters, etc. Let’s ask them to get involved in getting Bill C439 passed. Ya never know. Can’t hurt to try!
