Alicia Silverstone Favorite Vegetarian Dog Treats

Alicia Silverstone and her husband keep vegetarian in the entire family–including the couple’s dogs!
Silverstone recently took to her blog, The Kind Life, to discuss the dogs’ meatless diets and share her recommendations for canine food.
She feeds her pups the Canine Health Line from Dr. Harvey’s brand of dog food. Canine Health Line offers a mix of human grade organic grains, vegetables and herbs with absolutely no animal products. It functions as sort of a doggie “Hamburger Helper,” as you add your own protein to the mix, such as lentils, and cook it.
Silverstone recommends about adding extra supplements to the mix, though.
“We also add the supplements, L-Carnatine and Taurine. These are 2 amino acids that are essential to some dogs. They might be added to some commercial dog foods, but in this case with Dr. Harvey’s they are not. When dogs are deficient in these nutrients, it can cause diomyopathy, a serious illness where the heart becomes large and flabby and can no longer function properly. This usually happens to middle-aged dogs that have an L-Carnatine or Taurine deficiency due to their breed, size, genetics, or diet.”
When it comes to a snack, Silverstone’s dogs get treated to Boston Baked Bonz treats, Dr. Harvey’s Sweet Potate’r Chews and Mr. Barky’s Vegetarian Dog Biscuits.
