The Hard Rock Cafe in London is initiating Paul McCartney‘s Meat Free Monday campaign in its restaurant, beginning June 7, and the change coincides with McCartney’s UK tour, according to Gigwise.
The menu will feature choices like Linda McCartney’s brand of veggie burgers and several drinks. According to a PR rep from the Hard Rock Cafes, the Linda McCartney veggie burgers were launched there when the brand was first created.
McCartney’s motivation behind Meat Free Mondays is get people thinking about the relationship between meat consumption and the environment.
“Having one designated meat free day a week is actually a meaningful change that everyone can make, that goes to the heart of several important political, environmental and ethical issues all at once,” McCartney said.
A recent UN report urged that less consumption of meat and dairy is necessary for the planet and to sustain the population, which is estimated to reach 9.1 billion people by 2050, according to an article in The Guardian.
“Impacts from agriculture are expected to increase substantially due to population growth increasing consumption of animal products. Unlike fossil fuels, it is difficult to look for alternatives: people have to eat. A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change, away from animal products.”
The report also stated that meat and dairy production is responsible for “70% of global freshwater consumption, 38% of the total land use and 19% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.”
