Johnston campaigned in the 1950s to end the slaughter of wild mustangs and earned the nickname “Wild Horse Annie.”
Malick has acquired the right to use the book Mustang: The Saga of the Wild Horse in the American West by Deanne Stillman as a basis for the film.

I am so excited to find out about your effort in making a film about my dear friend Velma B. Johnston (Wild Horse Annie). I meet Velma and Charles in in late 1957 thru my parents. My step father worked a a Mobile Gas Station that County Commissioner J.C Specks McKenzie owned on 4th Street in Reno.
Velma And Charles and there Dog used to stop at the service station for gas and my Step Father use to take care of there car. I use to hang out at the station a lot and became friends with the Johnston’s. I went to there Ranch a few times and when to there home after they move into the city often to visit Charles and listen the his stories of his life and the life that was his and Velma’s.
I miss them both even after all these years. I hope you will be true to her life in the making of your film.
Best Regards,
