Meatless Mouthful–Tim Gunn On Faux Fur

“I’m also not a great fan of faux fur that looks real — I’d much rather have it look fake.”
—-Project Runway fashion mentor Tim Gunn, in an interview with The LA Times.
Sounds like looking through the archives of Fur Real or Fur Fake would be painful for Tim–even when the fur is completely synthetic.
What’s your take on faux fur?
Does knowing the source is synthetic make it easier on the eyes?

I adore fake fur that looks real. I don’t see what the problem is, no creatures were harmed and if someone asks me if my coat is real I say no it’s faux. They are usually so impressed with the realness of it that they buy a faux instead of the real thing so it’s promoting faux. Being extremist does nothing but make a joke of animal welfare issues.

When I was little and Happy Meals were my favorite thing to eat, I didn’t understand the point of fur. Why not just pet an animal? As an adult and a vegan, I love the look of faux fur, but I still don’t get the point. I can pet my cat if I want to feel something soft. I mean, if that’s what you’re into, more power to you and your real-like faux fur. But I don’t get it.
