Seth MacFarlane Discusses “A Million Ways” To Treat Animals Right On Film

Seth MacFarlane gave an interview to PETA where he discussed the use of animals in the movie industry and the impact of animal welfare on his latest film, A Million Ways to Die in the West.
“If it were up to me, that would be the law that you have to treat animals that way if you’re doing a movie,” MacFarlane said. “And I think at some point it will be. I think that’s the next big civil rights victory of sorts that will eventually find its way into actuality.”
MacFarlane discussed how modern technology allows producers to circumvent using animals altogether, as he did for his movie Ted. But even with this technology, you still run the risk of stressing the animal.
In the scene where Ted the teddy bear fights a duck, MacFarlane and the crew explored several options. One plan was to combine CGI and real ducks interacting, then cutting one out and replacing it with Ted.
“Yeah, but you’re really going to upset the f*cking duck,” MacFarlane said. “We don’t want to do that.”
To avoid even the possibility of bothering any live ducks, the crew used a puppet one.
