Freestyle skier for the USA, Gus Kenworthy, is taking in several stray dogs he picked up on the streets of Russia in his spare time when he wasn’t picking up the Silver medal.
Kenworthy has been posting updates on the dogs to his Twitter account, including the arrangements he needs to make to bring them back home to the U.S.
Many have read about Russia’s stray dog population that has been in danger since the games started. To reduce what the city of Sochi considers a threat or nuisance to tourists, a company was hired to cull them. Some celebrities who are also animal welfare advocates have written to Russian officials, asking them to consider more humane options in the future.
Several days ago, Kenworthy posted this pic with the caption: “Oh my glob, look who I just found! :)”
All the animals coming home with him will be available for adoption soon.
He’s also keeping at least one for himself.
You can find more pics of the pups eating and sleeping with the Colorado native here.
