Quantcast Vegetarian StarMeatless Monday Recipe–The Shirley Temple Drink

Shirley Temple

Most beverages without milk or cream are vegan (with the exception of alcohol that is filtered with animal ingredients), so a mixed drink for a Meatless Monday recipe doesn’t at first sound all that novel or interesting.

But this drink concocted after one of America’s greatest acting legends, Shirley Temple, is not only refreshing, but also provides an opportunity to throw in a few healthful kicks in the punch.

There are two stories behind the drink. One is that Temple claimed she was never involved in its creation. The second is that a bartender made it especially for her in the 30s. Whichever story is true, America has never fallen out of love with the drink that combines flavors of orange, lime and cherry.

Vegetarians and vegans are always looking to add nutrition to any item (even fried, fatty “veggie” junk food), and this drink is no exception.

Drink to Shirley in 2014 with a version that will provide wellness to keep you watching her movies for decades. Choose orange juice with pulp for fiber that is fortified with calcium and Vitamin D. For the soda or seltzer, go for a natural brand without preservatives or corn syrup. Throw in a spoonful of immune boosting serums or powders to keep you thriving during the cold months.

People magazine has two versions of the famous drink you can grab here.
