Russell Simmons is starring in a new ad for the animal advocate group Mercy for Animals.
The billboard promotes vegetarianism for all, but is especially mean to reach out to the African-American community in Chicago.
South side Windy City residents can see the “Live Well. Eat Well. Choose Vegetarian” message in their neighborhood.
“I’ve been involved in a lot of things that were trend setting,” Simmons says in the video, suggesting vegetarians get active in making plant-based eating “cooler,” which will lead to more vegetarian dishes being offered in more places and ultimately, less animals eaten.
The trend now for African-Americans and health isn’t going into right direction.
The New England Journal of Medicine published data that cites that before age 50, African-Americans are 20 times more likely to experience heart failure than whites. And the American Diabetes Association says African-Americans are two times as likely to develop diabetes.
“The best tip is to stop eating meat,” Simmons says.
