Quantcast Vegetarian StarCicely Tyson Abandons Vegetarian Diet For “A Trip To Bountiful”

Cicely Tyson is a true spokesperson for what the vegetarian diet can do for longevity.

Almost into her 80s, the actress once compared putting the right foods into your body much like running a luxury car on the right fuel.

That’s why it’s hard to believe Tyson would choose to trade the premium for regular just to get to know her on-stage meat eating character better.

Tyson is starring as Carrie Watts, a widowed woman living in Houston in the 50s in the play The Trip to Bountiful.

For the role, the actress temporarily abandoned her plant-based diet for a meatier one that Watts would have eaten during that time.

“I find it difficult to understand how you can project another person’s life if you have not eaten the food they eat, lived and breathed the air,” Tyson said. “When I’m on the stage and I’m talking, I can visually see the gulf, the woods, the farm. I can visually see it so I know what I’m talking about.”

There have been plenty of actors who’ve had the producers and other set crew bring in substitute meats for scenes that required the real thing.

You would think Tyson could just as easily imagine a much happier farm where the animals graze without fear of being eaten and the landowners choose Tofurky instead.

The Trip to Bountiful wraps up in October, which is when Tyson will hopefully return to the eating patterns that have kept her looking great all these decades.
