“Washington Post” Editor Joe Yonan Interview With Humane Society

Washington Post food editor Joe Yonan not only made the decision to adopt a plant-based diet, he decided to put his journalism skills to good use and write a cookbook on it.
Eat Your Vegetables debuted this month, and it represents part of a bigger move that Yonan labeled “bold” for a major food critic–to both eat vegetarian and make it the focus of your column that reaches thousands, if not millions of people.
Yonan has an interview with the Humane Society of the United States about the book and his diet decision.
He reports that reactions so far have been much less critical than expected. Perhaps it was because he gave his readers something to warm up to, sneaking a little veggie recipe in every now and then.
From the HSUS:
“I had been writing the “Cooking for One” column for about five years. Last year, I was saying in the column things like, “Now that I’m eating less and less meat,” or “Now that I’m mostly vegetarian.” I think subconsciously I was feeling out what kind of reaction I was going to get. Were people going to say, “I love this stuff, but why aren’t you giving us any meat?” But none of that really happened. So when I was thinking about a new column, I thought “We don’t have a vegetarian column in the paper. I should just admit to people that I’m a vegetarian and go for it.”
