Robert Redford Fighting Horse Slaughter In The US

Robert Redford is joining in the campaign to prevent horse slaughter from being reinstated in the United States.
Together with former New Mexico Governor and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Bill Richardson, the actor announced the formation of a foundation that supports animal welfare groups like the Humane Society of the United States and Front Range Equine Rescue taking legal action to prevent this.
The move in the U.S. to approve horse slaughter continues to grow, despite some data indicating Americans aren’t in favor of it.
Recently, President Obama approved inspection permits for equine plants in two states, Iowa and New Mexico.
But according to the Humane Society of the United States, 80% of Americans support a ban on horse slaughter.
The industry would most obviously be cruel to animals, as horses in the supply are likely to come from those retired or injured from racing or other entertainment industries.
The safety of Americans consuming horse meat is also an issue, as many of the horses are given multiple types of drugs to keep them up and running.
A few representatives have recognized this threat as well, and have introduced the Safeguard American Food Exports Act as another measure to stop the practice.
