Mayim Bialik has shared a few vegan substitutions for traditional Passover dishes in the New York Times “Well” blog.

In a post titled, “A Vegan Passover,” the blog discusses how certain foods restricted at Passover, grains, beans and corn, may present a problem for vegans who subsists on the items.

The traditional Seder plate, consisting of six foods that symbolize the story of Exodus, contains both lamb and egg, two items that are definitely not vegan.

Bialik has created substitutions for both.

“Iā€™m already used to giving up things I like because the values of veganism are critically important to me,ā€™ā€™ the Big Bang Theory actress said.

Bialik replaces the lamb’s bone with roasted beet. The bloody appearance of the vegetable works to symbolize the blood the Israelites placed on their doors to ward off plague and the death of the firstborn.

She uses a wooden egg to replace the real one which represents mourning the loss of the Jew’s holy temple. On her children’s plates, she places an egg-shaped musical shaker.
