Black History Month And Black Vegetarian Leaders

February is Black History Month and a great time to not only celebrate civil rights, but highlight the dozens of black community leaders, celebrities and other famous persons who either follow or have followed a diet and promote animal rights as well.
The Reverend Al Sharpton, who once weighed over 300 pounds, found following a mostly vegetarian diet helped him lose over 100 pounds.
He encourages other black Americans to follow his lead.
“So I say if KFC wants to take [African-Americans’] money, and use it to pay for sloppy practices that hurt animals, I say we send them a message that this is not going to happen. I’m calling on people to boycott KFC until they adopt animal welfare systems recommended by PETA,” Sharpton said in a statement.
Hip hop businessman Russell Simmons refuses to bend on his ethnics when it comes to making decisions about products, such as his new yoga fashion line.
“I don’t have any products that I don’t believe in,” Simmons said. “I won’t take part in the suffering of animals, exploitation of people or abuse of the planet. I can’t say that I’m a vegan and then own a steakhouse. It’s a karmic thing–you get what you give. It’s kind of nice when you’re serving the planet. I can go to sleep.”
Other notable black leaders who follow a vegetarian diet include Alice Walker, Chaka Khan, John Salley, and Erykah Badu.
