Goodbye Big Macs with special sauce and hello McAloo Tikki with Chutney. The fast food giant McDonald’s has announced it’s opening its first ever all vegetarian restaurant.
“It will be the first time we have opened a vegetarian restaurant in the world,” a spokesman for McDonald’s in northern India, Rajesh Kumar Maini, told AFP.
The meatless McDonanld’s will be located near the Golden Temple in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in northern India, where much of the population abstains from meat for religious purposes.
“[It makes sense because] there is a significant population that is vegetarian or becomes vegetarian when they visit religious sites,” said Arvind Singhal, CEO of Technopack, India’s leading retail consultancy.
“A vegetarian store makes absolute sense in the places which are famous as pilgrimage sites,” Rajesh Kumar Maini, a spokesman for McDonald’s India, told the Financial Times.
Unfortunately, in the United States, vegetarians are still waiting for McDonald’s to make even its fries free from animal products. But in other parts of the world, fast-food vegetarian cuisine seems to be working.
In Germany, the company re-introduced its veggie burger to increase sales among women. And several McDonald’s India already offer the McAloo Tikki–a fried breaded potato and pea patty that sounds very similar to a samosa Big Mac.
