Nigel Barker, the America’s Next Top Model photographer known among animal welfare activists for capturing evocative images of the Canadian Seal Slaughter, hosted an event with the Humane Society of the United States to encourage chefs and restaurants to boycott Canadian seafood until the annual seal slaughter has ended.
“Having witnessed the majesty that is the birth of the harp seal pups and the travesty that is the ensuing slaughter, I know that the coming together of such celebrated chefs is a show of solidarity to say NO to Canada, NO to the seal slaughter and YES to a boycott of Canadian Seafood until the killing is permanently ended,” Barker said. “Yes, we will make a difference. With thousands of chefs, restaurants, grocery stores and conscientious people willing to stand up, be counted and photographed the seals have more than a fighting chance. Now is the time to keep up the momentum and help change the future of not just the seals but for all of us. The harp seals deserve it and so do we.”
Pescatarians can easily find out if the restaurant they’re visiting is one of the 5,500 establishments participating in the boycott with an online tool provided by the Humane Society.
The restaurant locator allows you to click on a particular state and find businesses in the city of interest that have agreed not to purchase or serve Canadian seafood.
