David Zabriskie Racing Tour de France On Vegan Diet

Vegetarian Tour de France fans may be interested in watching American cyclist David Zabriskie during this year’s race. The returning competitor will be adding a second challenge to the 2011 race–completing it with a vegan diet.
Zabriskie has maintained the diet for nine months with good results.
Before going vegan, he consulted with other professional vegan atheltes– triathlete Brendan Brazier, author of The Thrive Diet and creator of the vegan supplement line Vega and professional motorcycle racer Ben Bostrom.
In an interview with Peloton Magazine, Zabriskie explained how he gradually cut animal products from his diet. He watched films that raised questions about the ethics of certain foods. And after getting blood tests done that revealed he had several allergies, he decided to remove most meat and dairy products from his meals.
“So my change in diet was really a gradual process,” Zabriskie said. “I had cut meat out of my diet and then had a hard time trying to reintroduce it, same thing with dairy. The transition was nearly complete. The last thing I had to cut out was the eggs. I had met some healthy athletes that adhere to a vegan diet and I just believe it’s a super healthy way to go. I don’t even like to call it a diet because it’s not something I plan on stopping. It’s truly a lifestyle choice for me.”
Wishing him nothing but the best of luck!
