“The King’s Speech” Producer Is A Voice For Voiceless Animals

The King’s Speech producer Emile Sherman is known for creating an Academy Award nominated film portraying King George VI and his battle to overcome stuttering.
But it may not be as well known that Sherman is also the force behind one of Australia’s biggest animal welfare organizations, Voiceless, which Sherman established in only a year after seeing video footage of factory farms during a United States animal rights conference.
Sherman hasn’t eaten meat since he was 21-years old.
“Voiceless and the animal protection world is part of the fabric of my life,” Sherman said. “If people were aware of where the meat they eat comes from, they would in a large part take different decisions.
“The first step is largely to understand where your food comes from, and the ethical implications of it.”
These days Sherman is especially concerned with the live export of cattle from Australia to Indonesia, a practice that has recently come under scrutiny after footage of inhumane slaughter conditions was uncovered.
“The Australian industry has known about the inhumane slaughter practices in Indonesia since 2000,” Sherman said. “It has failed to improve animal welfare conditions and simply cannot be trusted.”
“I have been to industrialised factory farms in Australia and have seen lots of footage of acute animal suffering due to physical pain and emotional distress,” he added. “Live export is only part of the picture.”
Other Australian animal welfare issues that concern Sherman include the killing of kangaroos for meat.
More information on Sherman’s organization, Voiceless, can be found on its webpage.
