Los Angeles Schools Vote On Increasing Vegetarian Items On Menu

Jamie Oliver may have had a hard time getting the Los Angeles Unified School District to listen to him during his Food Revolution series, but at least LAUSD is listening to the needs of its vegetarian students.
This district is scheduled to vote today on a 50 million dollar, 5-year contract that will put more meatless items on the menu.
The district has always provided at least one vegetarian item for breakfast and lunch since 2006, but those items weren’t exactly the best quality. In other words, salads and cheese sticks don’t necessarily qualify.
The new contract will allow the schools to serve gourmet veg meals like vegetable pad thai and veggie sushi rolls.
“We’ve served vegetarian entrees every day, but usually it’s just mac and cheese, a cheese sandwich or cheese pizza,” said Dennis Barrett, director of food services.
“We are excited about this contract because it would allow us to raise the flavor profiles of our vegetarian foods while still giving kids things they find tasty and good.”
If approved, the district is looking to source the prepared food items from Ontario-based Five Star Gourmet Foods.
Sure hope they give Oliver at least one reason to celebrate.
