Amanda Beard is helping the frogs this summer by making sure they have as great an experience in the pool as she did during the Olympics.
The swimmer who stripped down to her original bathing suit to protest fur for PETA purchased the Frog Saver Lily Pad in case any toads or frogs accidentally end up going for a swim and find themselves unable to escape.
When amphibians and small animals find themselves in a pool, they will swim to the wall looking for a way out. Artificial lily pads like the Frog Saver allow them to hop on the pad, then use a ladder attached to it to escape.
“I spend almost as much time in the water as I do on land, so I really relate to frogs and other amphibians,” Beard said. “Sadly, I’ve found dead frogs in my pool and it’s heartbreaking to know that they drowned because they weren’t able to get out to dry land.”
Several brands of these life-savers are available on the market. The inventer of FrogLog, another amphibian ladder, was motivated to create such a device after learning one friend woke up to find 53 frogs in his backyard pool and that several types of animals, including moles, mice, turtles, salamanders and squirrels.
