The Humane Society of the United States has received a prestigious “Telly Award” for its coverage of a factory farm ran by Smithfield Foods.

“Undercover at Smithfield” highlighted severe abuse of pigs at one of the nation’s largest pork producers  by exposing how pigs are confined in small, cramped gestation crates that allow them little movement.

“The video shows how much Smithfield’s breeding pigs suffer when confined in cages so small, they can barely move an inch,” said Mary Beth Sweetland, director of investigations at The HSUS. “This Telly Award underscores the importance of whistle-blowing investigations that the agribusiness industry is now trying to suppress with draconian legislative proposals.”

Founded in 1978, the New York based Telly Award’s purpose is to, “honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web.”

Smithfield replaced gestation crates for larger spaces at some of its farms, but has not yet reached its original goal of becoming completely crate-free by 2017. Several states have passed laws banning these crates, including Florida, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, California, Maine and Michigan.
