Quantcast Vegetarian StarWeird Al Yankovic Clears Up Those Vegan Rumors

Weird Al Yankovic

If you read a rumor that Weird Al Yankovic is a vegan, that’s not true.

The singer, musician and recent children’s book author cleared up those misconceptions during an interview with On Milwaukee.

No doubt about it, Al’s still vegetarian. But he’s not one of those vegans who will take the name for themselves and occasionally cheat when no one’s looking.

“I am still a vegetarian, and I try to be a vegan, but I occasionally cheat,” Yankovic said. “If there’s a cheese pizza on the band bus, I might sneak a piece.”

At least he’s honest.

According to his IMDB trivia page, Al became vegetarian after a girlfriend gave him a copy of John Robbins Diet for a New America.

I think that’s called a bad vegan and there’s nothing wrong with that.

  2. herwin Says:

Al doesn’t feel the need to call himself a “vegan” because it is hip and fashionable to be “vegan”, very admirable.
Can’t say that for celebs who ride the vegan train, cheat, and then, shocker, have the need to dish other vegans.

  3. Brien Comerford Says:

Vegans and vegetarians both merit commendation for reducing cruelty to animals, deforestation, water, air and land pollution and many environmental and ecological problems.

  4. Kira Says:

Well, he’s definitely a vegetarian. Vegans don’t ‘sneak’ food, they make mistakes. Purposefully having cheese is not an accident. Good on him for having a mostly vegan diet though. It would be awesome if he could be more committed.

  5. P. Fish Says:

    Al, WTF!?

You’re the BMOC. You’re the guy on the band bus people are paying to see.

And you’re telling me you can’t swing some Daiya cheese!?! or some Follow Your Heart cheese, or Chreeese, or the Lisanatti cheese? They’re all vegan. Even that crappy Galaxy brand makes vegan cheese now.

There are now ready-made vegan cheese pizzas you can keep in the bus’s fridge. Or you can get them in many mainstream grocery stores.

There’s no excuse slacker! And consuming the titsqueezings from another species isn’t weird, it’s fncked up!

Both vegans and vegetarians are dumb as hell

  7. Crystal Shepard Says:

    P. Fish – I have an idea – why don’t you go off on someone who *isn’t* in the 1% of humanity doing the least harm to animals? And I’d suggest making it someone who isn’t scrupulously honest about his own failings. There are literally billions of them.

People like you do more harm to the interests of animals, by attacking well meaning people who are putting forth a serious effort, than Weird Al could ever hope to do.

The two vegan responders here do a great job of illustrating why the world loathes vegans.

    JessiJ,
I was going to write a similar comment! I am a vegetarian who tries to cook a vegan meal at least once a week but I cannot stand the sanctimonious attitudes most vegans seem to shove in peoples’ faces. If I ever make the switch to vegan, I will not call myself a vegan if it don’t have to.

I’m vegan and commend others for attempting to reduce their harm, wherever you are on your journey. I remember how difficult it was for me at first, to go both vegetarian then vegan.

The good news for others thinking about it is that after a long time of doing it it got really easy, especially with the range of non-dairy cheeses, cream, icecream, chocolates, cakes, pancakes etc (and some excellent vegan nutrition sites, Vegan support packages that help you do a 30 day trial etc).

I never thought it would be possible to get a nice tasting non-dairy cheese, but on the weekend I was at a vegan festival and found a whole host of different kinds – it’s worth researching if you love cheese!

I understand those who would find the decision hard, because being vegan was too scary for me to think about as an omnivore. I once said to my vegan friend that I couldn’t even be vegetarian, let alone vegan.

What helped me was thinking about what I COULD do, rather than what I COULDN’T do – and really researching things. At first I decided I could try vegetarian meals when I was eating out and find ones I enjoyed.

Then I tried learning a few vegetarian recipes, thinking “I can at least cook, say, 3 veggo meals during the week”. I gradually cooked less meat meals and more vegetarian meals. And one day after learning more about the meat industry, I gave meat up entirely. Never ever believed I could do it, because I loved the taste of meat so much.

Then I heard about how baby calves and baby male egg-laying chicks were killed in the dairy industry. So I took the things out that I was okay doing, but still ate some dairy/eggs.

About a month later (to my shock) I decided, after reading overwhelmingly awful information about the egg and dairy industry, to become vegan. I gave myself room for error because I knew it would be such a difficult transition, and sure enough, in the first few months, I had a few non-vegan things. I expected that and continued to eat mostly vegan, eventually ironing out all the wrinkles.

If I am at a person’s home and they have gone to a lot of trouble & accidentally have something with a bit of cheese or milk in it I will respect that and have some. At home, or when out by myself, I am strictly vegan.

I commend people on any positive steps they can take. My mother-in-law surprised me the other day by saying she really enjoyed vegan food, and wondering whether was it possible to eat vegan or vegetarian meals mostly and have meat sometimes, and I said “Absolutely”. A wonderful, positive step, animals are being saved, and maybe when she becomes comfortable with that, one day she might feel comfortable to take another kind step and another.
