AAA Publishes Top Vegetarian Restaurant Picks

Written by Vegetarian Star on April 29th, 2011 in Business, Food & Drink, Restaurants.

AAA, one of North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organizations, has compiled its list of top-rated vegetarian-friendly restaurants across the United States. Based on a poll from its professional inspectors, AAA applied its famous 3-diamond rating system and named its 13 top picks for eating veg on the road (if you’re not lucky enough to be a local in the city).

While many associate veg eating with ecletic spots in New York city or a health-crazed trend of the West Coast, AAA found great restaurants in the most non-stereotypical regions like Utah, Nebraska and the heart of the midwest, Ohio.

Like the Dragonfly Neo-V Cuisine, a three-diamond rated restaurant in Columbus, Ohio:

This well-established vegetarian and vegan restaurant graces the older, urban University District neighborhood. Chef-owner Magdiale Wolmark draws his menu exclusively from plant-based foods, offering a full selection of courses from soup to dessert. Entrees include mock duck, a house-made gnocchi with barnier olives and confit garlic and a “mac and cheese” made with orzo pasta and a vegan cheese topped with cornmeal-encrusted broccoli.

Some establishments cater exclusively to vegetarians and/or vegans. There are also suggestions for restaurants that serve meat, but realize how attracting the veg crowd can benefit business, like French Meadow Bakery and Cafe in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Restaurants like French Meadow  are a growing trend. According to Nation’s Restaurant News, data compiled by the Chicago-based research group Mintel found that menu items labeled “vegetarian” increased by 12% between 2007 and 2010.
