Humane Society’s Wayne Pacelle Interview With KQED (Audio)

Written by Vegetarian Star on April 14th, 2011 in Animal Issues, Audio.

President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States Wayne Pacelle recently interviewed with Northern California’s public radio station KQED where he discussed the most recent seal hunt initiated in Canada, his new book, The Bond, and numerous animal welfare issues.

Pacelle mentions that while the morality of the seal hunt makes it an obvious practice that should end, even those who don’t object to it morally should not see any reason for it to continue on an economic level.

“The economics don’t make sense,” Pacelle said. “In each of the last two years, this thing generated a million dollars in gross receipts and the Canadian government is spending perhaps 10 or 15 million a year promoting it. Talk about boondoggles–this is it.”

Callers had the opportunity to ask Pacelle questions about animal rights, which ranged from Michael Vick to foie gras to leash laws.

Near the end of the interview, Pacelle summed up what the HSUS, animal activists and most people in the world who love animals probably believe:

“I believe that towards animals is one of the building blocks of a civil society. I don’t think we can be a society based on fairness and justice and leave the animals out of the equation.”

Below is the entire audio interview, which is a little less than an hour.
