Quantcast Vegetarian StarJohn Bartlett Thrilled With Fur-Free “Runway To Green” Collection

Runway to Green is launching a collection of fashions created by some of the world’s top designers in order to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Each designer has created an item for the Runway to Green collection that will be available in retail stores nationwide. These same designers have made the commitment to investigate more sustainable manufacturing standards set forth by the Clean by Design intiative from the Natural Resources Defense Council.

All designers pledged to adhere to eco-friendly standards when creating the pieces, so it’s no surprise vegan designer John Bartlett made the decision to write to Salma Hayek, one of the hosts of the event, urging her to keep fur out.

In the letter, Bartlett explained to Hayek how fur is treated with toxic chemicals and how the Environmental Protection Agency has even had to fine some fur farms for their use of those chemicals.

Bartlett received a response that absolutely no fur will be used in any Runway To Green collection.

It’s estimated when you take into account all the processes involved with creating a real fur garment–from animal trapping, care and slaughter to the chemicals used to create the finished product–a real fur garment takes 15 times the amount of energy to produce than a faux one.

Fur farms with animals create waste that makes its way into neighboring waters. When one fur farm in Washington state was charged with polluting a creek, fecal coliform levels measured in the water were 5,000 times greater than the legal limit.

Some designers participating in the Runway to Green project include Gucci, Prada, Jason Wu, Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent and Stella McCartney. Runway to Green will launch exclusively online at Net-A-Porter.com, then worldwide at select retailers online and in department stores.
