Quantcast Vegetarian StarMichelle Obama Tells Walmart “Let’s Move” To Healthier Groceries

Walmart has unveiled a plan that will overhaul the types of foods sold at its super centers across the country today in a ceremony with the First Lady present.

Michelle Obama‘s “Let’s Move” campaign that promotes better food choices and exercise has influenced officials to embark on a plan to make packaged foods healthier, change labels to help consumers recognize better choices, combat the excessive consumption of dessert foods, make healthier foods more affordable and increase charitable support to nutrition programs.

“No family should have to choose between food that is healthier for them and food they can afford,” said Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart U.S. “We are committed to working with suppliers, government and non-governmental organizations to provide solutions that help Americans eat healthier and live a better life.”

And if you think the changes will make Walmart’s food unrecognizable to its customers, think again. According to some store officials, it’s something people have been requesting for awhile.

“Our customers often ask us why whole wheat pasta sometimes costs more than regular pasta made by the same manufacturer,” said Andrea Thomas, senior vice president of sustainability at Walmart, according to the LA Times.

It would be interesting to know if Walmart has any plans to make its selection of specialty vegetarian items more affordable, such as frozen veggie burgers. Also, how does this plan fits into its expanding organic selection, something that has come under fire in the past, due to some labeling issues.
