Pop star Rihanna has partnered with Parlux Fragrances to unveil a scent with her name behind the brand, Reb’l Fleur.

According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Parlux signed a statement in 1995 that it would not conduct or pay others to conduct tests on animals. Some animal tests, such as the Draize eye test, which involves smearing a substance in rabbit’s eye, obviously involve pain to the animal. And in some cases, results aren’t predictive of what can happen in human tissue.

Reb’l Fleur comes in Eau de Parfum sprays and body lotion.

Dr. Neal Barnard, in an article at Crazy Sexy Life, explains an alternative to animal testing in cosmetics.

“Cell- and computer-based methods can provide more accurate data on a greater number of human health effects. And these methods are much faster and more affordable than traditional animal-based methods, making it possible to assess infinitely more cosmetics and ingredients.”

Dr. Barnard also discusses the proposed Safe Cosmetics Act making its way through Congress, which would mandate more testing of products, possibly involving more animal subjects and costing thousands of dollars more than what is being used today.

“The Safe Cosmetics Act does encourage the development of new methods, and it includes a promising section on animal testing alternatives, which supports the use of non-animal testing methods where available and effective. But the bill must take an even stronger stance in favor of modern science to meet the goal of better human health protection.”
