With the cold season just hitting some of us, it’s still not too late to grab a few winter-wear items. Vegan designer and founder of Vaute Coture Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart has an interview in the Huffington Post where she gives alternatives to staying warm without using wool.
“It depends on the utility & look you’re aiming for, but if you’re going for the look but don’t need the warmth, cotton moleskin is a great option,” Hilgart said. “If you need warmth (as I always did in Chicago), high tech fabrics are needed– Polartec is an excellent one that includes fabrics that are all recyclable, and often recycled.”
“If you need sweaters, and cold weather accessories, it’s easy to find cotton and acrylic hats, gloves, scarves, and sweaters, and I have a new line of hand knits made from the waste of soybean farming. I was looking for an option that was vegan, sustainable, and super luxe with the look of wool, and this was it.”
Besides not contributing to animal suffering, synthethics also provide a relief to those allergic or sensitive to animal fabrics like wool or down and are often lighter, making them a much better alternative for outdoors activities.
The video above has Hilgart explaining her thoughts on ethics in fashion and how the birth of Vaute Couture happened.
